Summer Cup 2025

This tournament started on February 6th (Waitangi day, but just a normal evening round at 7:30pm)

The tournament was eight rounds of 75+30 NZCF rated classical chess.

Congrats to Ollie Archer, Nic Croad, Russell Dive and Anthony Ker who share the title with 6/8. Ollie came very close to winning this tournament alone, stumbling only at the last hurdle.

Registration

To register for the Summer Cup you can either email me before 7:30pm on Wednesday 5th February or register in person this Thursday. If you choose to register by email please make sure that the full name of the player registering is obvious. If you will be needing a half-point bye in Round 1 you may as well include that information too.

Registration is possible at any point during the tournament if you would not like to register right away.

The Draw

The draw will be done 24 hours prior to each round at about 7:30pm each Wednesday. It will be published to the Club website and I will also send an email if I can work out how to format it nicely. I will try to make minimal changes to this draw, but if I have a lot of people quickly replying saying that they actually can't make their game I may republish it any time before 9pm on Wednesday. I hope to have to do this very rarely (ideally never).

There will sometimes be a pairing-allocated full-point bye. It would pay to check each week in case you are the one that gets this. The recipient is of course still welcome to show up on Thursday.

If your opponent does not show up, which may occasionally happen, you will be entitled to claim a full-point bye, or you can opt to get repaired.

If there are multiple unpaired people wishing to get a game on any given night I will attempt to pair these people just before 8pm, after the other games have started. If there is an odd number of people then obviously one person will miss out. The only guarantee of a rated tournament game is if both you and your opponent show up.

Byes

Each player will be entitled to 2 half-point byes across the 8 rounds. Any player that would like a bye must let me know before 7:30pm on Wednesday. If you realise after this time that you cannot make the Club on Thursday, please still let me know so that I can inform your opponent, but the bye will be scored as zero points. Please make an effort to keep to the Wednesday deadline. I understand things sometimes come up on the Thursday and that's fine, I expect the occasional Thursday bye-request, but would like this to be as rare as possible.

If a player fails to show up without any communication with me I will assume that they are no longer interested and withdraw them from the tournament. They may enter again but this will have to be done again by a further email communication with me.

Withdrawing

A player may withdraw from the tournament at any time, however please avoid doing this on Thursday if you have already been paired for that night, as you will be leaving your opponent without a game.

I'll also add that anyone wishing to just play casually and not part of the tournament is also welcome on any night.
