Ian Sellen's Reports

Ian's reports are in reverse chronological order. The dates are the report dates, typically a couple of days after a round. You can find the games in the club database or in the tournament file. I plan to recover more of these reports to add to other tournaments. I may add game snippets inline if there is any interest.

December 21st - Final Results

Congratulations to our club champions: A grade - Russell Dive and Anthony Ker B grade - Cohen Young C grade - Michael Ashe and Jamie Webster Swiss - Michael Sole

December 4th - Week 10

A grade - Congratulations Anthony Ker! For a while it seemed that the bright young things were finally overturning the established world order, but Anthony is now guaranteed at least joint first place. And, after languishing near the bottom of the table for much of the tournament, Russell Dive can actually tie for first place, all he has to do is beat Ryan Winter and Anthony in the last 2 catch up weeks! Whatever happens, Ryan Winter, Ollie Archer and Thomas van der Hoorn can be extremely proud of their performance in this tournament

Only one game played in the B grade, which doesn't substantially change anything there

The Swiss - Congratulations Michael Sole, sole winner of the Swiss after beating Ali Katkodia (who nevertheless had an outstanding tournament). Kayden Loke, who went into the last round on equal pole position with Michael, failed to convert one of his two connected passed pawns on the 6th rank and lost a really interesting game against Wallace Enegbuma. So congratulations to Wallace, who finishes in sole 2nd place. If only he hadn't agreed a draw when he was winning against Michael in round 8!

The joint winners of the C grade (players under 1800 in the Swiss) are Michael Ashe and Jamie Webster - congratulations to them too! Thanks very much to everyone who played in this tournament, it's been fascinating, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the new players develop.

This week we'll move the catch-up players upstairs and have a tournament in our main room. Also, does anyone fancy taking part in a Transfer Chess (bughouse) championship either of these next two weeks?

November 27th - Round 9

Congratulations to Cohen Young, convincing winner of the B grade Club Championship. The other grades are still up for contention.

November 19th - Round 8

Getting to the end now - two more rounds in the Swiss, one more scheduled round in the A and B grades followed by catch-up games.

Thanks to everyone who sent PGN files. Especially those who lost, I appreciate how painful that might be. Round 8 can be re-lived here and the full tournament file is attached.

A grade - We have two teenagers leading after 8 rounds! Thomas van der Hoorn moved up to joint leader with Ollie Archer by beating Arthur Pomeroy. He has one extra game to play too. Ollie and Anthony Ker drew, in one of the most accurate games you're ever likely to see. Russell and Nic both won.

B grade - Cohen Young has guaranteed himself at least joint top position with his latest win. Edgar Benitez could catch up but he needs Cohen's help! Check out Ross Jackson's fine attacking win against perennially friendly rival Alan Aldridge. Alan was late and probably tired after driving home from Hilton Bennett's funeral in Hamilton, and the game finished well after midnight.

Swiss - Wallace Enegbuma outplayed Michael Sole at the top of the table, but agreed a draw in a winning position, maybe respectful of Michael's reputation. Kayden Loke moved up to joint 2nd place, one point behind Michael Another game which was agreed drawn with one player totally winning was Yiğit Saglam vs Chris Symon - a totally crazy game, check it out! Plenty of other good games to play through too

November 13th - Round 7

Three more rounds in the Swiss.

Two more rounds in the A and B grades plus catch up rounds (three weeks).

Thanks to everyone who sent games this week. You can play through all the games here and the whole-tournament PGN is attached.

The race for the A grade is hotting up - Ollie Archer maintained his lead with a quick win over Ed Tanoi, but Anthony Ker has two extra games up his sleeve. So next week's clash between Ollie and Anthony will be important. Thomas van der Hoorn is also in contention having beaten Russell Dive this week, and currently sits in joint second place. Echoes of round 7 of the Julian Mazur - Russell lost on time again, but this time he was genuinely struggling pretty much all the way through.

Another absolutely beautiful finish by Cohen Young - you have to play through this one! Cohen remains the clear favourite in the B grade.

Michael Sole took his time but eventually beat Jamie Webster in the Swiss. He extends his lead to one point, as Wallace Enegbuma took a bye this week.

November 5th - Round 6

Thanks very much to everyone who sent PGN files to me this week. All the round 6 games are online and analysable here and the full tournament file is attached

Good to see a full schedule in the A grade this week. Tournament leader Ollie Archer was doing well against Ryan Winter, but Ryan turned the tables and won. Ollie keeps his lead though, having not taken any byes yet. Thomas van der Hoorn and Anthony Ker are half a point behind. Anthony was rewarded for his tenacity in a gruelling 96 move game which finished well after midnight, with a draw against Nic Croad. In the B grade Edgar Benitez similarly defended an ending a pawn down against Cohen Young, so Cohen retains his one point lead in this group.

With 4 rounds to go, the Swiss has a Sole leader for the first time, with Michael beating his nearest rival, promising newcomer Francis Henrys. Wallace Enegbuma is half a point behind, so he can't relax yet.

Check out the great wins by Matthew Keith, Joy Ulm and Lucas Qu over highly rated opposition. And Callum Scott was lucky to escape with a draw against Timothy Wang. It's a wonderful time to be at the club with so much new talent on display

October 29th - Round 5

A warm welcome and good luck to two new He brothers, to replace the ones we lost to Melbourne - Jacob and Zachary, playing in the Swiss. Thanks as usual to everyone who sent PGN files. All the round 5 games can be played through here and the full Club Championship file is attached. Check out Bill Forster's excellent annotations - looks like Russell Dive had a bit of an escape.

There are so many good games to play through in this round, I strongly recommend you take a look!

Ollie Archer opened up a one point lead in the A grade with a brutally competent win against Nic Croad - definitely another one to play through. Ollie has 3½/5, with his nearest rivals Anthony Ker and David Cilia Vincenti both on 2½/3.

Cohen Young continues on his merry way in the B grade with a convincing 16 move win against Leo Malcolm. The only other player who had been on 100%, Edgar Benitez, stumbled into a one move mate when he was totally winning against Alan Aldridge.

Two players lead the Swiss with 4½/5, Michael Sole and Francis Henrys. They won against Gordon Lyall and Michael Ashe respectively. Wallace Enegbuma is half a point behind, after he came back from the dead against Aidan Malcolm.

October 22nd - Round 4

All the round 4 games available here

And full tournament file attached. Thanks to everyone who sent PGN files this week, especially Ryan Winter who added annotations to his.

A warm welcome to Afique Nazeer and Mahesh Kumar joining us in the Swiss this week.

Three more postponed games in the A grade mean that the position is more unclear than ever, but Ollie Archer has a narrow half point lead after drawing with Art Pomeroy in a short but interesting game that swung both ways. Congratulations to Ryan Winter for his upset win against Nic Croad - his annotations only point out where he could have played better moves, but obviously he played some pretty good moves too!

Edgar Benitez and Cohen Young both scored wins in the B grade, both players still undefeated on 4/4. Ross Jackson and Nicholas Winsley are doing their best to keep up.

The Swiss is full of interest, with a lot of experienced players mixed in with newcomers and fast improving juniors. Michael Ashe followed up his win against Gordon Lyall last week with a draw against the number one seed Michael Sole - great result! And another nice win for new member Francis Henrys means he catches up with the leaders.

October 15th - Round 3

Thanks as usual to everyone who sent PGN files this week. Games are here and the complete Club Championship file is attached.

Neither of our IMs managed a win this week - Thomas van der Hoorn held Anthony Ker to a draw, and Russell mis-played a rook and pawn ending to lose against Ollie Archer. This means that leading the A grade now are the Maltese champion (David Cilia Vincenti on 2/2) and the NZ junior champion (Ollie Archer on 2/3) Two players in the B grade are setting the pace, Cohen Young and Edgar Benitez, both on 3/3. In the Swiss, a great result for Matthew Keith to beat Kayden Loke, rated 1974. Leading the group are no 1 seed Michael Sole and Michael Ashe, whose opponent Gordon Lyall lost on time this week. If absolute mayhem all over the board is your thing, check out Lavender v Henrys in particular, but there are lots of good games to play through here!

October 8th - Round 2

Thanks to everyone who sent PGN files this week, more than ever! Round 2 games here and entire file attached

Please note - from Thursday I am going to ask people to analyse their games in the upstairs room, as it gets quite noisy in the foyer, disturbing both the bridge players and the people still playing their chess games. Thanks in advance for your understanding!

A depleted A grade this week, only 2 games being played. In the South Island Championships in Invercargill, David Cilia Vincenti is on 5/7 as I write, with one round to go. Felix Xie and Ben Hague are both on 6/7.

October 1st - Round 1

Welcome to the club championship 2022! We have 60 players for this tournament, so we are back up to pre-pandemic levels, hooray!

We have new players Eric Ulm, Rebecca Fairbrother, Timothy Wang, Justin Wang, Yigit Saglam, Azra Saglam and Matthew Keith - please make them feel welcome.

Important reminder - as these are standard length games, you are required by FIDE and NZCF regulations to write down ALL your moves throughout the game, even when you are in time trouble. If you see your opponent is not writing their moves down, grab my attention and I will issue a warning. If the behaviour continues, that player will forfeit the game.

Games file attached, and available on Lichess here

Thanks to everyone who sent PGN files this week.

Lots of great games to play through here! Check out Leo Malcolm v Nick Winsley and Yigit Saglam v Wallace Enegbuma in particular. Leo picks some really interesting offbeat openings, and often comes out well by exploiting his opponents' lack of knowledge. Here he gets a massive attack but falters and Nick comes back to win.

Other news -

Congratulations to David Cilia Vincenti, who is the newly crowned chess champion of Malta.

Good luck to the Wellington College team, playing in the National Schools Championships in Christchurch this weekend. The team consists of 4 of our most promising juniors, Josh Langford, Ollie Archer, Cohen Young and Zachary Thirkell.

Good luck to our members playing in the South Island Championships in Invercargill this week - I notice that our old friend Layla Timergazi has come out of retirement for this event, so that should be interesting!

And finally, good luck to Russell Dive and Anthony Ker, playing in the National Bridge Championships this week.
